La Ferte-Vidame - Cleres - Buchy - Neufchatel-en-Bray

Tuesday 22 April  This morning we left La Ferte-Vidame to drive further north in stages.  Just love these empty tree-lined roads. We stopped off for a couple of hours at Verneuil-sur-Avre for a wander and coffee.  The church tower is one of the highest we've seen for a small town.  We went to go in, but there was something going on - seemed full of teenagers being spoken to. Beautiful spring flowers in the park and a sculpture of the 2024 Olympic flame just outisde the park. We carried on north around Dreux to Rouen.  The satnav took us west of the city which we thought was less busy than the eastern route, only held up a little bit at roadworks where they are building an enormous flyover.  When that's finished that route will be a breeze. Next stop was where we had planned to spend the night, at an Aire for Camping Cars at Cleres.  We parked up there early afternoon, although we were doubtful about staying the night as all the services that were...

Camping Les Abrias du Perche, La Ferte Vidame & visit to Senonches (updated)

Saturday 19 April Only to say that we moved a few miles further north, stopping for quite a big shop at a hyper Auchan en route, to come to a small family-run campsite in La Ferte-Vidame.     This is north of Nogent-le-Rotrou and south of Verneuil-sur-Avre - kind of in the middle of nowhere, but we think we mght be just in Normandy. The boss here runs a little restaurant and bar.  It seems that all his family have gathered here for the weekend and they are all having a wonderful time!!  We had a very nice meal there this evening.  They've made us laugh because one of the younger women was wearing a sandwich board advertising all the events they have planned for the rest of the summer and we had to listen to them trying to do some karaoke rather badly for a while!  Dinner was good and we chatted to our English neighbours too.   Sunday 20 April  Happy Easter to all our readers!  A chilly day, so we very happily stayed in for the...

Visit to Vaas

Image
Friday 18 April  Staying another night at La Bruere-sur-Loir, so today just drove the short way to the slightly bigger town of Vaas beside the River Loir.  Very pretty views from the bridge over the river. We hadn't had a meal out since my birthday, and as there was a hotel (La Vedaquais) advertising lunch 'menu' for 17Euros, we went in!  We had the place to ourselves for a while, so had the full attention of our young waiter. It was quite a basic meal, but for that price - 3 courses + bread + apple juice - it was great.  Except John wishes he'd chosen the fish instead of the meat.  Beef cheek was a bit too chewy! Needed a walk to settle the food, so followed the signs to a working mill.  The museum wasn't open, but we could look outside and watch the wheel turning. Then back to Camping-Car Park at La Bruere for the rest of the day.  Travelling further north tomorrow to a campsite for a long stay - 3 nights.

Camping Les Ormes

Image
Wednesday 16 April  This morning we travelled north to just beyond Chatellerault to the village of Les Ormes beside the River Vienne.  We were mindful of the fact that the campsite closes for lunch from 12-3.30 (this is France after all!) so we arrived at 11.30 - but just like at Le Jardin de Rose, they had the mowers and strimmers in!  The campsite was empty, so we could choose any pitch, but we needed to avoid the workmen.   So we settled, had our lunch and went out for a walk by the river into the village.  We were going to look for a geocache at the lavoir - see the little roof covering the spring water trough where the women did the washing in days gone by. First, we just sat on a seat watching the peaceful river. But then the municipal chaps arrived unloading two large skips - somewhere for the wood from the fallen tree to go. We realised that where the geo was going to be was behind the danger tape so we went off to explore the village.  ...
